This spring, CodeWeekend ran a fully online Web & AI Development Bootcamp for Afghan women and girls aged 15 to 28, joining from provinces across Afghanistan.

They arrived with different starting points. Some had never built a website. Others already knew enough HTML to want structure, feedback, and a finish line.

What they shared was the chance to treat software as a skill they were allowed to take seriously.

The 2026 cohort
From selection to the Demo Day stage

April to August, fully online — with a capstone application at the end of it.

CodeWeekend 2025: Web & AI development bootcamp and becoming a non-profit organization

This year, CodeWeekend took two steps to make technology education more accessible: a new Web & AI Development Bootcamp, and registration as a non-profit in British Columbia.

We believe learning has the power to change lives. When young people are given the chance to learn new skills, they also gain the confidence to imagine new futures.

Together, these steps strengthen our ability to reach more learners, build meaningful partnerships, and keep creating opportunities where they are most needed.

CodeWeekend Updates – 2022

A year passed, and it is time to review what we have done at CodeWeekend. Ours is a positive conclusion: 2022 was one of our most productive years since 2014.

We ran the third cohort of our coding Bootcamp, worked with an incredible number of instructors and mentors, and were supported by two major partners: Hackajob and Scrimba.

Here is what the year looked like, and what we are planning for 2023.

CodeWeekend Bootcamp – 2021

In 2019, we started the CodeWeekend Web Developer Coding Bootcamp and made it our main focus — with limited resources, a lot of demand, and completely free of charge.

The pilot program was a smashing success: 12 of its 20 participants graduated.

You can find their profiles, along with some case studies, on our Stories page.

Two cohorts
From a pilot to a remote Bootcamp

From a free 2019 pilot to the October 2021 cohort.

What is Software Development?

Gmail, Outlook, Facebook, Skype, Google Chrome, and the other tools you use on digital devices are software. Developers build them through a process called software development.

You may be reading these lines in a browser on a computer or phone. You may have opened it to search for jobs, apply for scholarships, join a business call, scroll through a social feed, or upload content to your organization’s website.

You may have used a management information system to generate reports, or asked Siri to play a song.

A Successful Career in Software Development

From more than ten years in software roles across Turkey, Afghanistan, England, and Canada, I developed a few principles that may help people entering the field or trying to grow in it.

They come from companies of very different sizes and structures. Some are also covered in Chad Fowler’s book The Passionate Programmer.

In this guide
Five principles for a career that crosses borders

What's Next?

Interest in learning to code has grown rapidly. But it takes more than a one-off course — like any skill, it takes dedication, discipline, and grit.

Articles, technology publications, and mainstream media emphasize its importance. Campaigns such as Hour of Code promote computer-science education, and more organizations are working to increase the participation of women and girls in technology.

Coding bootcamps, institutes, schools, and online programs offer many ways to begin. Here is how to start well.
